A rare oak and other mixed woods Nonsuch chest with extensive marquetry inlay representing the celebrated Palace of Nonesuch at Cheam that Henry V111 built for himself. The Palace was bought by Elizabeth 1st in 1591 and it remained in the possession of royalty until 1670 when sold to the Duchess of Cleveland and Baroness of Nonesuch, who proceeded to demolish the building for its materials in order to raise funds with which to pay off large gambling debts. Provenance: Acquired by George Durrant father of Kathleen Durrant, probably C1860, as wedding present on the occasion of her marriage to E.E.Benest from the Channel Islands.
